In times of economic stagnation, it is a crucial time that everyone should look for ways to survive. But, how to actually stay invincible in time like this? When the hardest time has arrived, the people that the organization will choose to have are those who possess multi-skill. So, in this article, let us have a look at how to shine and catch the eyes of the higher-ups to ensure our place and stability in the organization.

  • Fear not of technology . The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic instantly demonstrates the high need for technology. We should not think that we will not be able to catch up with the technology that the younger generation is using like it is their second nature. We just have to be broad-minded and be willing to learn new skills that are necessary for our duty. For example, accountants or human resources staff could try to store their information in a Cloud system. This will reduce the use of papers and allow information to be kept systematically. Also, marketing and public relations staff could try looking into User Experience (UX) that is gaining importance on the online market.
  • Even though we have to be the cream in our hard skil l, for example, the tour guide needs to know many languages, just having hard skill is not enough. To enhance ourselves with soft skills is also important because it is a basic skill that will enhance the effectiveness of the job. Soft skill includes knowing how to listen, speaking at the right moment, summarisation and communication, analysis, be optimistic, and have no fear of change.
  • Keep ourselves updated with new skills to apply to our work that is ever-changing. Do not refuse or oppose if we will be sent for training or it would be even better if we are being initiative and look for an online course for self-improvement. Nowadays, there are many free courses or paid courses that provide certificates for us to put on our resumes. For example, graphic design, online marketing, big data management, consumer behavior analysis, etc.

  • Keep improving on our work . Do not think that we are irreplaceable because we are setting up a trap to stop our growth with that idea and we might eventually be left behind. We should try to analyze weaknesses and build strengths in our organization with new skills. For example, if there is a way or system for paper works to be more flexible, just go ahead. Or if the accounting department has any marketing strategy, they should try proposing too. This is because these ideas could bring about new perspectives that can save cost for the company as well
  • Think out of the box or use more creativity by looking for inspiration around us. The examples are TEDex Talk panels or Facebook pages that invite business people and entrepreneurs to share their ideas and experiences as well as expo events that, nowadays, offer interested individuals to attend by themselves or online.   • Cooperate with other departments. In the future, there is more tendency to work as a cross-functional team and there will be lesser segregation work. It is a good chance to let go of the specialty that we have held on to for so long and increase understanding in other lines of work. This results in a team playing and we will be able to feel that we are cogs that drive the company to grow.

When the former way of working can no longer guarantee that skill and past success will lead to the bed of roses in the present because the world spins faster than we thought, being open-minded and embracing differences will enhance our multi-skill.
