8 Decades of Sala Chaloem Krung: The Very First Theatre of Thailand

The time might pass, but Sala Chaloem Krung or Chalermkrung Royal Theatre is still elegantly located in the middle of Bangkok just like in the past. This place plays an important role in the history of the Thai entertainment industry as it is the very first theatre that was given to Thai people, regardless of class, from HM King Prajadhipok, Rama VII of the Chakri Dynasty. A monument to commemorate the 150 th anniversary of founding Bangkok. HM King Rama VII used his own wealth of about 9 million baht to construct this theatre and this theatre was the most modern theatre in Asia during that era. The architectural style is a mixture of Thai and Western arts. It matches perfectly and elegantly. The building is spacious and modern. The interior is grand without a single pillar stood inside. There is a complete system of lighting and sound, which is very modern and its seating capacity can hold more than 1000 guests. It is the very first theatre with air-conditioners and the architect is Mom Chao Samaichalerm Kridakara, who had just finished his architectural study from overseas.

In the past, this is the place for all kinds of entertainment, ranging from live theatre, films, Khon (Thai masked dance) and music. The first movie shown on the opening of the theatre in 1933 was a soundtrack French film, Below the Sea. Mostly, Sala Chaloem Krung will show foreign films as there were only 2-3 movies produced in 35 mm. dimension per year in Thailand.

The first theatre received tremendous success and was warmly welcomed by residents of Thailand. So, there were many theatres built nearby Sala Chaloem Krung. However, people’s way of life changed and people turned to Siam Square to seek entertainment from watching films instead of Sala Chaloem Krung. Several theatres had to close down except Sala Chaloem Krung. Nevertheless, Sala Chaloem Krung was not as bustling as before until it was renovated and become lively again. This is to serve the will of HM King Rama VII that he wished this theatre could serve as a representation of Thai entertainment and continue to be a platform for Thai performances and culture to be passed down from generation to generation.

Sala Chaloem Krung has now renamed to Chalermkrung Royal Theatre. It does not only focus on showing films but all kinds of performing arts that show the identity of Thailand as well as international arts. It was opened for the public to enjoy the entertainment again on 2 July 2003 with Khon Chintanarumitr performance. It is an adaptation of Thai masked dance with modern technology, consisting of lights and special effects controlling by computer. Besides, there are many types of performances such as music programs, dramas with male and female leads, charity film festivals, and commemorations.
